Spanky and Alfalfa have been lumbered with baby-sitting duties which neither of them are thrilled about. Darla doesn't make things any easier when she tells the boys that their mother has just said they need to take dancing lessons! The boys, along with Porky and Buckwheat, head off to Jenksville where they come across a small bakery. After looking through the window and seeing the owners feeding their dog (Laughing Gravy) a treat, Spanky gets the idea to ask the proprietor if they could have some cookies for their own dog (Pete). The lady brings out some dog biscuits instead, which Spanky and Alfalfa then eat with reluctance. Buckwheat and Porky find what they believe to be a stray dog and try the same trick, little knowing their dog belongs to the owners of the bakery. When the boys start asking for treats 'for their dog' they basically take the absolute piss! Successful, Buckwheat and Porky take their haul outside and share it with Alfalfa and Spanky but their little scheme is interrupted when the owner presses them for payment of all the cakes! When they can't pay the owner gives them some hammers and puts them to work on a rockpile whilst making them wear prison clothing. The owner of the bakery is also the sheriff and takes his shotgun to teach the boys a lesson. The boys run and hide in a barn and think the man is shooting at them when they hear what turns out to be his car misfiring as he is starting it up. The boys finally make their escape when the animals begin attacking them. |

Favourite bit Buckwheat and Porky asking for all the 'treats' for their dog. Piss-taking in its finest display! |
Trivia • Copyrighted June 24, 1937. • Film #156 in the series. • According to Alfalfa's mother, the rooster that plucks off his cowlick was Alfalfa's own pet from home as was called Elmer. [source: Robert Demoss] My opinion • A really enjoyable ten minutes... until the end bit. The owner of the bakery/local sheriff (played by Otis Harlan) takes it upon himself to go after the four young boys with a loaded shotgun... and for what? They didn't steal anything? What criminal act did they actually do? Sir, it's because of total gun-mad control-freaks like you that make the rest of the world despise your stupid gun laws! You wanted to shoot and kill four young boys..... for being cheeky? Something wrong with your way of thinking mate... 😡😂 |
