Harvey Shepard

born: 26 April 1905
Valentine, Nebraska,
United States of America
died: 19 March 1965
San Diego County, California,
United States of America
(age 59)

Tall, dark-haired American actor who frequently appeared as an extra and bit player in Hal Roach films throughout the 1930s. His parents were Laura (née Kern, 1883-1956) and Harvey Colburn Shepard, Sr. (1874-1953). He had one brother, Dr. Francis Clinton "Fritz" Shepard (1908-1965), who died along with his 28-year old son in a private airplane crash five months after Harvey's passing. Like Francis, Harvey's middle name is also given as Clinton on his 1940 World War II draft registration card; his headstone also notes his nickname of "Shep."
Harvey moved to Los Angeles in 1927, working for an automobile firm, then an airplane company; he was in the movies by early 1929. One of Harvey's more interesting assignments was serving as the "whoops" stand-in for Phillip Reed in "The Last of the Mohicans" (1936), providing Reed's loud Mohican "whoops" off-camera. Interestingly, in the 1940 U.S. Census, Harvey gives his occupation as "director" in motion pictures; on his World War II draft registration card from later that year, he is working freelance for various motion picture studios.
Sometime in the early 1930s, Harvey married Cuba Lee Glick (previously m. Wingate & Trick, 1902-1977), with whom he had a daughter, Laura Wyant Shepard, in 1932. Cuba filed for divorce in 1935, but she and Harvey evidently reconciled as they're still together in the 1940 U.S. Census. They split for good by 1944, when Cuba re-married to William F. Alexander in Mexico. By 1950, Harvey relocated to Oceanside, San Diego County, California; in that year's U.S. Census, he is residing there with his parents, divorced, and working as a "helper in [a] real estate office." He remained in the area for the remainder of his life, passing just over a month before his 60th birthday, and is buried at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside.
His surname has also been spelled "Sheppard," "Shepherd," and "Shephard" in various sources and reports.
