A young lady is being forced into marriage with a wealthy nobleman, against her wishes. Her suitor is in a store and in a telephone call with her when he goes to get change from the clerk to continue talking to her. Charley, who is afraid of dogs, is fleeing one that has chased him down the street and into the vacant phone booth to escape. He picks up the receiver and engages in small talk with the voice on the other end of the line. She tells him of her predicament and he offers to help her. Unbeknownst to Charley, the girl's mother listens in on the conversation and hears him confess he will try and sneak in through the back of the house. The mother warns a policeman to be on guard to avoid this happening.
En route to the girl's house, Charley continues to be chased by the dog. In order to escape it, Charley leaps onto the shoulders of a passer-by, who just happens to be the new butler heading to the same house. When they arrive, the cop thinks the butler is the trespasser he was forewarned about and chases him off. Fortunately, the butler drops his letter inviting him into the job and Charley picks it up and uses it to gain access.
