Ida Schumaker

born: 06 June 1882
Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
United States of America
died: 25 August 1969
Hollywood, Los Angeles, California,
United States of America
(congestive heart failure/complications after fall & broken hip, age 87)

American actress who often played maternal roles. During the 1920s, she also worked as a casting director and as an artists' representative for Guy Coburn, Inc.; among her clients in the latter position were Wade Boteler, Victor Potel, Joseph Bennett, and Buck Black, among others. Her last name was naturally spelled Schumaker, but has also been spelled Schumacher and Shoemaker in various sources and credits.
Her parents were Ella Agusta (née Key, 1857-1924) and James Wilson Avery (1857-1892). She married Raymond Herman Schumaker (1877-1929) on 21 September 1902 in St. Paul, Minnesota. They evidently divorced sometime before 1918 (when Raymond remarried), though Ida claims to be "widowed" on the next four U.S. Censuses (1920, 1930, 1940, 1950); however, Ida's funeral service record, which excerpts her death certificate, does say that she is divorced. Ida and Raymond had two daughters: Georgia (1905-1919) and Raida (1908-2000). Georgia died at age 14 due to "uremic convulsions due to nephritis." Raida followed her mother into films and also acted as a bit player, extra, and stand-in, initially under her given name (Raida Schumaker), then under the name Raida Rae.
Ida passed away at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital from congestive heart failure, per her funeral service record (sourcing her death certificate, which itself likely expands more on the cause); her obituary in the Hollywood Citizen-News (4 Sep 1969) says she succumbed to "complications following a fall and broken hip," having been "[i]n ill health [for] many years." She is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, sharing a headstone with her daughter Georgia.
