American actor who may be remembered as the know-it-all Sgt. Doubleday playing opposite Joe Sawyer in six Streamliner army comedies for the Hal Roach Studios from 1941-1948. In 1945 he married his Fall In co-star, Lois James. They divorced in 1954 with one daughter, Patricia... who was killed by her partner in 1985 after he beat her to death.
The 1920 and 1930 Census's say he was born in NJ, along with his Sept.1942 enlistment as a Private in the Army Air Corps (Medical Administrative Corps) record. His headstone says he came out as a Tech Sergeant. At least one source lists his place of birth as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
