There has long been speculation as to which is the best version of The Flying Deuces to buy on DVD.  Well I have the answer.

I own four prints of the film, and all of them are with varying degrees of quality.

Here's my official verdict, with screencaptures of the same scenes from each print.

Without question, the winner is the STONEVISION print.  Not only does it have the original credits, but is the best print as well.

The STONEVISION print:
Has the original intro with the RKO Pictures credit, running for 11 seconds.
Has the original Laurel and Hardy screen credit which uses the same background as the title card.
Has the end credits.

The KINO/LOBSTER print:
Lacks the original intro with the RKO Pictures credit and instead replaces it with an Astor Pictures card with a fake background.
Misses the end credits, though does have a musical score playing over a blank screen.
Is very slightly darker than the Stonevision print.
The one bonus this disc does have over the others is that is contains two rare, silent film reels of L&H in Edinburgh and Tynemouth (14 mins total), as well as The Stolen Jools, The Tree In A Test Tube and This Is Your Life.  Also included is the French trailer to the film.

The DELTA and ELSTREE ENTERTAINMENT prints:
are, in a word, crap.

I would like to just say that it is not my intention to rob these companies of potential paying customers and deny them revenue through sales of their discs, but as a fan of not only Laurel and Hardy, but of The Flying Deuces as a movie, and having spent money on so many versions of the film to get 'the perfect print' I want to make fans aware of the comparisons in quality because some are quite simply, awful.

I have made absolutely no alteration to the screencaptures, no colour, brightness or contrast enhancements whatsoever - what you see is exactly how I captured each still.

What's your verdict?

Special thanks to Jim Clewer for helping me assess the print from Stonevision.
