LORD HEATH'S TOP 100 MOVIES
Constructing a list of one's personal favourite movies is no easy task. There are so many to choose from. Some are cinematic masterpieces, and others are simply films that make you laugh, cry or just be entertained. Most film lists will have the likes of Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Casablanca (I know, don't laugh!) and many other great and famous films. Those are considered by others as the greatest movies ever made. But that is not THIS list. This list is MY personal favourites and the films appear in the exact order as per the presentation.

100   CAPE FEAR  (J. Lee Thompson / Universal 1962)
Gregory Peck is the personality-lacking, stiff-acting lawyer who becomes the target of revenge from recently-released-from-jail Robert Mitchum in this black & white thriller. Decent support from Martin Balsam (who also appears in the remake) and Telly Savalas but it's Mitchum who is the one to watch here. His menacing performance and impressive physique barrels through the entire film with confidence and arrogance as he plots to get his way with the lawyer's wife (Polly Bergen) and teenage daughter (Lori Martin) - both of whom are as wooden as their on-screen husband/father Peck. Can't go without mentioning a powerful score from Bernard Herrmann too. Very slightly better than the remake 30 years later. Rated: 7/10
99   CAPE FEAR  (Martin Scorsese / Universal 1991)
Remake of the 1962 film with Nick Nolte and Robert De Niro replacing the roles of lawyer Gregory Peck and ex-con Robert Mitchum. De Niro saves the film with an outstanding Oscar-nominated performance, whilst Nolte and wife Jessica Lange are less believable. Credit to 17 year-old Juliette Lewis for an awkward yet satisyfing performance as the target of De Niro's desires. Not quite as tight as the original but decent enough. Martin Scorsese's directing is okay, but the overlong scene where De Niro lures the girl to the drama class and kisses her full on the lips is a bit overlong and dodgy. Rated: 7/10
