American actor, a World War I veteran. In 1922, he married Hazel Lucile Heberling (ca. 1902-1962), daughter of George C. Heberling, co-founder and president of the Heberling Medicine & Extract Company of Bloomington, Illinois; she filed for divorce in 1926 after Eddie had been convicted of stealing from mailboxes and was sentenced to six months in the Woodstock, Illinois, county jail. In October 1929, during the time of Prohibition, he and actor Warren Hymer, plus Hymer's wife (actress Mabel "Beau" Williams), were among eight people arrested after a "wild party" they hosted was broken up by police; Eddie, identified in the Hollywood Daily Citizen article reporting the bust by his real name (Edward J. Harpfer) with the occupation of writer, was alleged to be the owner of beer-making equipment and 60 quart bottles and 30 gallons of beer, which were confiscated by police. In late 1935, Eddie and 26-year old Hazel E. Kalil took out a marriage license, but the union didn't happen, and less than a year later, she instead married football player Roy "Bullet" Baker. In 1939, Eddie married Esther Hegvold (1913-1999), and this one stuck, lasting for over 32 years until his 1972 passing. As a veteran, he is interred at Los Angeles National Cemetery.
