American actor. He became a vaudeville headliner as a singer, dancer, comedian, actor and musician. In 1929, he married the stage actress who became Ginger Rogers in New Orleans. The marriage was annulled in 1931. He married twice more and had 2 daughters.
He moved from New York City to Los Angeles about 1930 and began acting in movies. In 1943 he made USO tours with Bob Hope, a friend for life and acted in his films & TV shows.
He was a US Army Sergeant in WWII. Appeared in movies and on TV into the 1960's.
