His half-siblings were Annie Carter, Hal Roach and Harold Lloyd casting director Leonore "Nora" Ely (1881-1933), and casting director/makeup artist William Horace Ely (1884-1968); his stepfather was W.H. Ely, and his nephew and niece (Nora's children) were Olaf Shuler and Regena Shuler. He previously worked as a butcher.
