American child actor, the son of Charles Oelze, and the brother of Doris Oelze. His birth occurred when his father was working for Universal Pictures as its cavalry commander; his mother, Hilda (Unger) Oelze (1894-1963), was previously a nurse for the Universal Hospital. Charles, Jr. was born as Karl Bernie Oelze, and was celebrated as the first child to be born in Universal City. He was named after Universal founder Carl Laemmle and Universal City's general manager Isadore "Bernie" Bernstein. By 1920, Karl was renamed Charles Frederick Oelze, Jr., after his father. In early 1935, Charles, Jr., referred to in the news as Carl Laemmle Oelze, attended the 20th anniversary celebration of Universal's founding.
