His parents were vaudevillians Frank Mudge (1868-1942) and Augusta "Gussie" Blansfield (1873-1952); they had one other son, Leland (1894-1949). Leland and Carl/Charles eventually joined the family troupe, with Carl/Charles entering films in 1926. His 1927 marriage certificate lists his birth name of Carl Mudge, and in the occupation section notes his professional name of Charles Morton in parentheses; he is an actor for Fox Film Co. His World War II draft registration card (dated 16 Oct 1940) lists his name as "Carl Sterling Mudge, alias Charles Morton," and his employer as Hal Roach Studio in Culver City. Some 1933 newspaper articles give his middle name as Stanley. He was married at least four times, including to Lya Lys in the early 1930s, with whom he had a daughter, Joyce Morton (b. 1932), who was born after their divorce. |
