American child actor, the son of Roach cinematographer Harry W. Gerstad (1886-1966) and Emma (Kueling) Gerstad (1886-1919); Bill's older brother was future Oscar-winning film editor Harry Gerstad (1909-2002). Their stepmother was briefly Irene De Voss. In adulthood, Bill worked as a technician for Technicolor (much like another one-time Roach child actor, Jerome LaPlanche). On 1 November 1933, he married Alice Beatrice "Bee" McMullen (1913-1982), with whom he had a daughter, Patricia Gaye "Patti" (Gerstad) Schneider; the marriage lasted for nearly 49 years until Beatrice's death on 1 September 1982. Pointless trivia: He was exactly 1 week old when the Titanic sank. |
