British actor who went to Hollywood and started out in silents. Most of the information is contained in his US Citizenship Papers. His Death Certificate gives an 03 October birth day but this was given to the coroner by his 2nd wife (married 1912) May who "refused" to tell the coroner her own age! The 24 October birth date is confirmed by the 1918 WWI Draft Card and the 1946 US Citizenship Papers. Obituaries and other reference sources give 06 October (and other death days). This may be partly due to the fact that he passed away in the hospital (after being struck by an automobile on 02 April) just an hour and 40 minutes before midnight on 05 October. He was also an accomplished singer. William Propert Standing requested a legal name change to "William Propert Carleton" as part of his US citizenship application. |
