American actress with the kind of face that could stop a clock! Apparently, she suffered from a disease known as "hypothyroidism", which accounts for her appearance. Her uncle, JOHN NEELY JOHNSON, (mother's brother) was elected the 4th Governor of CA (1856-58) and a Justice of the UT Supreme Court. Her Dad (DAVID OLIVER ADKINSON) was a prominent Judge (JP) and Post Master of Virginia City NV.
She was an accomplished artist (painter). Her name is often given as "LOUIS", "LOIS". "LEWIS", "LOUIE", "LOUISE" etc. Her son, MARION P., was born in 1906. That makes her a pretty old mother for that era! For many years she was buried in an unmarked grave at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
There is some debate over her year of birth. Findagrave.com lists it as 1852; the IMDb lists it as being 1858, and another source lists 1861. Her death certificate simply states "Unknown". At least one source gives Germany as her location of birth. |
