Sue Gomes

born: 13 May 1913
San Francisco, California,
United States of America
died: 06 April 1993
Portland, Oregon,
United States of America
(cancer, age 79)

Black-haired, blue-eyed American actress, model, and dancer who was a chorus girl in Warner Bros. musicals of the 1930s.
Sue's parents were Olga Mae (née Drefs, 1893-1958), born in Portland, Oregon, to Russian immigrants, and Frederick LaFayette Gomes (1890-1956), a tailor born in Idaho to a Portuguese father and an American mother from Georgia. Fred and Olga married on 31 July 1912 in Portland, but divorced shortly thereafter, and Fred remarried in 1916. Sue was born in San Francisco and raised in Portland, where she attended Grant High School; Sue and Olga relocated to Los Angeles by 1930, where Sue then attended Hollywood High School. Sue soon entered vaudeville, then pictures in the early 1930s.
Sue was married twice: her first marriage was to Vincent Garland "Buck" Weaver, Jr. (1906-1949), an actor and double for James Dunn who was later known as a photographer under the name of John Randolph; the union occurred on 5 September 1931 at St. John's Parish House in Los Angeles. Sue filed for divorce from Weaver in December 1935, alleging that he "was morose and had a violent temper," as well as having "a roving eye" for other women. To prove the last charge, in January 1936, Sue produced a witness in actress/stenographer Georgia Spence, who worked for Weaver and confirmed that he had called her up for a date "nearly every day for the past two months," though Miss Spence maintained that she always refused him; this won Sue the decree. In the 1940 Census (18 Apr), Sue and her mother are both divorced and living in New York City, with Sue working as a "showgirl" in "show business."
Sue's second marriage was to saxophonist Victor Richard "Vic" Francone (1905-1998) on 27 February 1943 in Vancouver, Washington. By then, Sue was back in Portland and working as a saleslady. This marriage lasted for 50 years until Sue's passing in 1993. The Francones are buried together at River View Cemetery in Portland.
