He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1906, filing two declarations of intention (in 1914 and in 1935) before being naturalized in January 1938 after filing his petition for such three months prior. Born George Frederick Sleight Plumtree, in 1922 he legally sliced off the Plumtree, from then on going by the full name of George Frederick Sleight. He married Alice Agatha Dwyer (1898-1994) in 1923; they had one son, George Frederick Sleight, Jr. (1925-1973), who worked as a child actor in films.
He is not to be confused with another older actor, Robert T. Haines (1868-1943).
