Canadian-born actress. Madlyn's Dad, John Ryan (1864-1903) was a barber. He died at age 38. The Ontario Death Record says only that his death was an "accident". In 1908, she and her Mom, Mary Long (1866-1953) moved to Seattle, Washington. She joined a professional singing, dancing, and acting group the "Juvenile Bostonians".
In San Francisco, the young and socially prominent Chilean counsel met and courted her. She married him, Henry Enrique Wilson (1885-1969), in 1915. According to her 1920 divorce filing, 4 months after the marriage he began his "hobby of attempting suicide" by turning on the gas in their bedrooom. In November of 1918 he attempted to throw himself out their apartment window and a little later tried to hang himself. In January of 1919 he hit her in the face and knocked her unconscious and when she revived he hit her again. She charged that he refused to work and borrowed money from her which he didn't repay and spent it on his friends leaving them short on funds. At the minimum she demanded $250 per month ($1920) to live as she was accustomed. After the 1920 divorce, he remarried and lived to age 83! Not long after her first divorce Madlyn married Clifton Logan Lampling (1880-1967) in 1921 in an elaborate ceremony in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was 13 years her senior and a wealthy, socially prominent banker whom she had known in her earlier days living in Seattle. Their daughter, Patricia (1924-2019) was born in Portland, OR and they later moved to Los Angeles. Madlyn filed for divorce in 1931, charging Clifton with extreme cruelty -- specifically, that he "had struck her without provocation and refused to support their daughter, Patricia Ann." (San Francisco Call-Bulletin, August 10, 1931). Before the 1940 Census, they were divorced. Madlyn had married Dale A Henderson (1898-1967), a building contractor, in June of 1940 in Las Vegas. The couple attended a New Year's party (January 01, 1941). After merry-making and returning home, Madlyn threatened suicide and to Dale's disbelief drank a glass laced with cyanide. The coroner declared it suicide and there was a suicide note found later, a scandal in the sheriff's department, a lawyer scam, etc.. In late 1941, the Mom managed to get the case reopened, claiming her daughter was murdered but to no avail and to this day some family think she was murdered. |
