American actor of Italian descent, who later moved to Hawaii and became a radio and early TV personality there from the late 1940s through the mid-1950s; he then became a real estate investor/developer. His parents were Phillipa "Fannie" (née Piazza, ca. 1880-1956) and Peter DeStefano (d. before 1920), who married around 1903. He had three siblings: Anna DeStefano (b. ca. 1905, possibly d. before 1981), Rosalie (DeStefano) Graffeo (1911-1988), and Peter DeStefano (1913-1981). In 1936 and 1938 California voter registrations, actor Lawrence S. Stevens is residing at 1376 North Ridgewood Place with others including actor Raymond Bailey. In the 1940 U.S. Census (30 Apr), Stevens and Bailey are now residing at 3058 Vale Vista Trail, along with actor Reed Herring (later known as Reed Hadley) and film dialogue director Howard [Harold] Erickson; Bailey is still an actor as well, while Stevens is now a salesman of wholesale liquors. Later that year (16 Oct), Lawrence Stevens filled out his World War II draft registration card; though six years older than the 27 years he claimed on the Census, and now at a different address (2000 Miramar), he gives the same state of birth (New York), and his employer as the Simon Levi Co. Ltd, indeed a wholesale liquor distributor, leaving no doubt that this is the same Lawrence Stevens from the Census. On his World War II draft card, he gives his birthdate as 28 June 1907, but a birth index record, his Social Security records, and death certificate (informant was his son) give the month as August. |
