Russian actor, also known as "Count John Orloff." He immigrated to the United States from Montreal, Canada, in 1906. He enlisted for the U.S. Army on 13 March 1908 at the Jefferson Barracks Military Post in Missouri, serving in the 9th Infantry, Company G, but he deserted on 20 November 1909 and was apprehended on 14 April 1911, being dishonorably discharged on 23 June 1911; in a 1912 newspaper article, Orloff's newlywed bride claimed "he was tricked into enlisting by enemies." In December 1922, he was arrested along with several others in a bust regarding counterfeit Bank of England notes. In December 1932, he was reported missing by his wife after it was discovered he never arrived for a visit with friends in Long Beach when he failed to return home for Christmas dinner; there was a fear he had vanished as a result of articles he had written for the publication "The Gentiles' Review," of which he was editor, for which he received threats. He was located several weeks later in a Beverly Hills hotel. In later years, he worked as a real estate broker. He was married at least twice: first to Mary Henrietta Sparrow (1856-1945), a London-born Chicago spinster-heiress, from 1912 to 1922, when she filed for divorce asserting that he had taken up company with another woman in Los Angeles. Next marriage was to Maude Freeman Orloff (1882-1968), a native of Memphis, Tennessee, sometime between 1922 and 1926, which lasted until his 1961 passing. He later went by the name of John Dimitri Orloff (spelling of middle name varies depending on the record). Some sources (WWI draft reg. card, death certificate) give his year of birth as 1874. I'm going with 1879 as that's the year on the majority of records I've found, including the earliest records I can find. |
