American actor, assistant director, and sound technician, the older brother of Hugh Fox. He assisted director Fred Jackman at Mack Sennett and later at Hal Roach (including on "The Call of the Wild"). By 1927, he was working as a cameraman, and by 1929, with the advent of "talkies," he began working as a sound engineer (in 1930, he was doing so for the Harold Lloyd unit at Metropolitan Studios), which he continued to do until his passing.
A World War I veteran, Bill was married twice, first to Margaret Eells (1898-1930), formerly secretary to film scenarist Jeanie MacPherson; after a failed first pregnancy in 1927, they had a daughter, Virginia Lee "Ginger" Fox (1929-2013), who went on to work as a virologist for the California Department of Health Services for 40 years, then for BioVir Laboratories in Benicia, California. Tragically, Margaret (also referred to in newspaper reports as Marguerite) committed suicide by drowning in 1930, leaving Bill and 16-month old "Ginger." Bill's second marriage to Louise Cupit (m. Fox & Eggleston, 1907-2003) lasted from 1933 to his 1950 death. He is buried at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Sylmar, California.
